Almost Home Behind the Scenes

Last week I had the privilege of working on www.KaylaBProductions.com 's newest film, Almost Home, as Producer and First Assistant Director. Kayla was the Cinematographer on Wayward. We realized that we make a pretty good team so she invited me to be a part of this project from its inception!

This story, written and directed by Kayla Saunders, is a beautiful tale about a child's imagination, hope and resilience and a grandfather's internal struggle with loss while balancing his promise to his daughter to continue to lift his granddaughter high and not let her lose her spirit of hope that her mother left her with. Set in the aftermath of the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, this fictional story is full of heart and inspiration to keep reaching for the stars. The title of the film comes from the notion that the astronauts were almost home when the disaster took place.

Kayla assembled an amazing team of industry professionals from around the valley and even as far as Hollywood, with the amazing Dave Perry acting as Cinematographer! Her lead actors were amazing professionals, as well, including two actors that you'll see in Wayward (Bela Ware, the little star of the film and younger sister of Elliot Ware/Wayward and Wynton Ware/Interference) and Jim Hoover who is a seasoned film actor who has appeared as the head Overseer of the Mill in Cotton Clouds and as Jonas Yates in Wayward. Caitlyn McAvoy, a New York based actress that often appears in Roanoke Children's Theatre and Mill Mountain Productions, masterfully plays the mother in the film with such emotion and heart, that the cast and crew were left drying real tears on set!

We shot for 6 days in warm 60 degree temperatures and frigid temperatures that dipped below freezing! But, through it all our team remained happy, healthy and in synch!

Here are some behind the scenes photos of the shoot! Photos courtesy of Deborah Ware Photography!
